Pitched in 2020, written in 2021, and edited for publishing between 2023-2025, These Wounds Bleed Black is a heart-pounding superhero tale told in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks.
I wanted to create this story for a number of reasons. As a young adult who was born after the attacks, I wanted this story to be directed to my generation; I think it is the best way to not only teach others why the attacks happened and its effects on our lives, but show why it is important to our history and the emotional weight it had on everyone.
And, to answer those who have wondered what life would be like had it not happened.
I wrote this book with great intentions... and a great amount of fear. I understood that I was writing about a sensitive event in our time, and, in knowing that, I would anger the vast majority who had it worse than I had. And there were already heroes that day; firefighters, police officers, doctors, pilots, military, even civilians like you and me.
But I want These Wounds Bleed Black to be a story for us all, a tale about the good and the bad, our rise and our fall. I aim to rewrite the current script many superhero films and books continue to follow, and leave a trace deep enough to remind us all of why we're here, and what we've sacrificed. That, even with powers, even with strength and pride, we can still be helpless.
This isn't a book about supervillains and superheroes, this isn't about time travel, nor a reenactment to what has come and gone. This book is much more than that; it is a blessing, a curse, a journey, a lesson, and a memory altogether. It has changed me for the better, and I cannot wait for it to fall into your hands in the future.
